Google Bolsters Chrome Security: Unpacking the Significance and Importance for Users

Google is taking steps to enhance the safety and security of Chrome browsing. Around 1% of Chrome users, both on desktop and Android, will receive a notification if they are chosen to test Google’s Tracking Protection feature. Let’s explore what this feature entails and how it aims to benefit users.

What are cookies and third-party cookies

Cookies act as trackers designed for web browsers, monitoring users’ time on a site. When another website places cookies on users’ devices while they visit a different site, these are known as third-party cookies.

For the past three decades, third-party cookies have facilitated targeted advertising, leading to experiences like repeatedly seeing that Mobile ad on various websites. Google’s Tracking Protection feature aims to limit this cross-site tracking by automatically restricting websites’ access to third-party cookies. The plan is to gradually eliminate third-party cookies for all users, with the complete phase-out expected in the second half of 2024.

What about Google’s ad business

Google is committed to ensuring user privacy while still delivering relevant ads. Their approach involves providing businesses with tools to thrive online, ensuring high-quality content accessibility, ranging from news articles to educational materials. Importantly, Google plans to save user interests and topics, derived from visited websites, and share this anonymized data with publishers and advertisers for targeted advertising. Crucially, the specific sites visited by users will not be included in the shared data.

User interests will be stored locally on their devices, not transmitted to websites. Furthermore, Chrome will exclusively send user interests, not their complete browsing history, to Google. This meticulous approach aims to strike a balance between personalization and user privacy.

It’s worth noting that Apple’s Safari browser features a “Do Not Track” option, while Edge includes a built-in “Strict Tracking Prevention” feature, showcasing the industry’s collective efforts toward enhancing user privacy.

In 2023, Generative AI took the spotlight, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT leading the charge in the AI revolution. Now, ChatGPT is seamlessly accessible on all platforms, making waves on both PCs and smartphones. To simplify the experience, OpenAI introduced a dedicated ChatGPT app for users to download and use for their queries.

But here’s the exciting news: OpenAI is working to enhance user convenience. Soon, users might be able to set the ChatGPT app as their default assistant on Android phones, eliminating the need to manually open the app for a smoother interaction.ChatGPT app could become your default assistant on Android in future. 

Android Authority recently explored the latest version of the ChatGPT app through an APK teardown, revealing intriguing codes hinting at a forthcoming feature. In ChatGPT version 1.2023.352, a new addition, “com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity,” is present but currently inactive by default. When manually enabled and launched, it reveals a captivating overlay on the screen, featuring a swirling animation accompanying the voice prompt of the ChatGPT app.

This finding suggests that users may soon have the option to seamlessly set ChatGPT as their default assistant on Android devices. Imagine effortlessly triggering ChatGPT’s voice chat function from any screen, enhancing everyday interactions with greater ease and convenience. Exciting developments lie ahead in the realm of AI and personal assistance!

As per the report, it seems the mentioned feature is currently experiencing functionality issues, frequently crashing. This suggests it might be either in an incomplete state or still in the process of development. There’s an expectation that OpenAI could introduce it in upcoming versions of the ChatGPT app.

Furthermore, the report notes the presence of indicators in the codes, pointing to the ongoing development of this feature. The addition of an XML file called “assistant_interaction_service” includes a “voice-integration-service tag defining the sessionService and recognitionService.” This detail strengthens the likelihood of ongoing development, indicating that future versions may bring more polished and operational features.

As the feature is still in development, OpenAI has introduced a new functionality to facilitate swift access to the ChatGPT app. This is achieved by incorporating a Quick Settings toggle for the app, allowing users to access it conveniently.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple.com sales will temporarily halt from 3 pm Eastern on December 21, with in-store inventory unavailable from December 24. The ITC’s potential ban solely impacts Apple, allowing continued sales through retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. Additionally, the proposed ban applies exclusively to watch imports into the United States, ensuring availability in other countries remains unaffected.

The pause stems from an ongoing legal dispute with medical tech firm Masimo. Following Masimo’s 2021 lawsuit, alleging Apple’s infringement on a blood-oxygen monitoring patent, a judge and the ITC upheld the violation in October. This triggered a 60-day presidential review, set to end on December 25, prompting Apple to proactively address compliance. Apple’s potential solutions include federal court appeals or a settlement with Masimo, potentially involving deactivating blood-oxygen sensing features.
